San Diego Rowing Club Wins Architectural Award San Diego Rowing Club wins awards not only on the water, but off as well. The American Institute of Architects recently recognized the design of The Garty Family Pavilion with an award of excellence. Designed by the Ocean Beach architectural firm of architects-hgw, the design is inspired by the visual elements found in racing shell hulls and oars. The layout features an indoor-outdoor orientation that takes advantage of the mild year round climate of Mission Bay, as well at sweeping views of water, sky and mountains.

Not only does the space serve as a unique gathering place, but it also displays the rich visual history of the rowing club. The long walls house club photos, memorabilia and awards, dating back to the founding year of 1888.

The design, planning and architectural management was lead by Randy Hanna, a principal of architects-hgw , and also one of the Club’s past presidents. "This was a project was that close to my heart," says Hanna. "Every morning for over a year, as we launched our shells on the beach in front of the boathouse, I would envision what this new environment would be like. The design is the culmination of hundreds of hours of spiritual inspiration, as well as all the other activities involved in designing a place for a very special group of people."

The new room has been well received by the rowing community and by architects nationwide. The time-honored tradition of an after-row coffee break has been re-instituted by the members. “It’s what the members of the original rowing club did after their morning rows at the old club located in San Diego Harbor near the convention center,” says Dodd Wragg, a morning regular at this informal morning ritual. "It's a great way for the current members to honor the traditions started by the club’s founding fathers before the turn of the century."
