Masters Rowing has
experienced unprecedented growth over the past decade. San Diego
Rowing Club has long been active in Masters Rowing and a leader in
the growth of our sport.
The Masters
Program has compiled numerous National Championships and FISA World
Championships over the past two decades, in all boat classes and age
categories. Long time member and legend, Kearney Johnston, started
it all, winning two events at the first FISA Veterans Regatta in
Bern, Switzerland in 1974, bringing home gold medals in the single.
SDRC competed in
the 2003 USRowing Masters National Championships at Lake Natoma and
came away with 51 medals and won National Championships in a record
13 events. This earned San Diego Rowing Club, the Team Points
Trophy and the overall Team National Championship, a repeat of the
overall Team National Championship that they won at Occoquan in
2002!
The Club’s Masters
Program is set up for men and women to train year round. SDRC
competes at major regattas throughout the year, including the San
Diego Crew Classic, the USRowing Southwest Regional Championships,
USRowing Masters National Championships and the Head Of The Charles,
along with other regional regattas during the spring and fall.
SDRC encourages
post-collegiate athletes to continue their rowing experience /
careers. The recent addition of the “Pre-Masters” category for
athletes under 27 years of age enables athletes to smoothly
transition to racing after graduation. The competition and race
results at Southwest Regionals and the 2003 Masters Nationals
demonstrated how popular and successful this new age category is
going to be in the future.
