President's Message

Since its founding in 1888, the San Diego Rowing Club has been known both locally and nationally for its devotion to competitive excellence, and also for its egalitarian club spirit. Its landmark home for nearly 100 years on San Diego Bay is now a Chart House Restaurant filled with trophies and club memorabilia. The current facility on Mission Bay at El Carmel Place was built in 1991 with a bequest from rower A. Wharton Coggeshall.

SDRC is known as a home of racing greats, including Del Beekley, a 1928 and 1932 Olympic team finalist and recently deceased SDRCmember, Olympian Jim Storm (1964 and 1968), the legendary Kearney Johnston at 92 years young, and former U.S. National Team/Olympic Team members Tim Watenpaugh, Bill Byrd and Pat Hayes. The Club is very competitive in regional, national and international masters rowing, holding the 2002/3 National Masters Team Championship trophy, and winning gold at the World Masters Games in Melbourne, Australia in the Master Mens Quad.  A former Junior standout Luke Walton completed an undefeated four years at Cal and was a 2004 Olympian.

Whether competitive or recreational, club members are all devoted to enjoying San Diego's fabulous water and climate, and sharing our enthusiasm for this great sport.

You Are Welcome!

We in the San Diego Rowing Club welcome new members of any experience level for rowing or sculling. Programs and instruction are available for beginners of any age through competitive masters. Row with a crew, or scull alone. Our members range in age from 14 through 74. Rowing is great exercise, providing a full-body, low impact workout. Enjoy the water on Mission Bay Park year-round and stay in shape at the same time. Our Club offers rowing equipment for members' use, or a place to store your own shell and oars. Sponsored annual events include the San Diego Fall Classic, a head race open to all classes of boats, and the San Diego Indoor Rowing Classic, a winter test of athletic strength on the Concept II ergometer (indoor rowing machine). The Coggeshall Boathouse at El Carmel Place provides locker rooms and workout space for free weight and ergometer training.

The Great Room of the Garty Family Pavilion is a fantastic venue for weddings, business offsite meetings or other catered events.

Sincerely,

Randy Hanna

SDRC President
